And The Winner's Are... Predictable, for The Most Part.

            The results are in. And they have been found predictable. This year was the same as every other year; we all have a clear idea who is going to win what award, we are only hoping to be surprised in a category or two. The surprises were few this year, and frankly some of them were disappointments not epiphanies.

Here's a little behind the scenes video about how Arnie Hammer was able to pull off playing both Winkelvoss twins in The Social Network. The use of CGI is both very incredible and subtle, and surprisingly much heavier than you would expect in this sort of movie.

In 1941, the film “Citizen Kane” was a critical success, earning several Oscar nominations—including Best Picture. The dramatic film was particularly praised for its script, cinematography, music and non-chronological narrative structure. The film itself followed characters trying to label the ‘eccentric’ (read: “crazy but rich”) billionaire of an organization that proved as popular as it was controversial—much like the protagonist himself. The protagonist was a loner and, to a scene, the smartest guy in the room. This overt, and only arguably deserved, self-assuredness was met with scorn and ridicule from friends and family, eventually leaving the protagonist isolated in his fortress of material success.

The 83rd Annual Oscar Nomination List for 2011 Arrives!

 

 Once again, the Academy Awards are upon us. Here is their list of nominations for this 2011 season. While it is shocking that some films haven't made the list, many of the ones that have deserve it. It's been a pretty good year for cinema, and there were many great movies the Academy had to choose from. Too bad not everything good could get up here, though. As you read the official list - you will see a few of my notes (in blue) of thoughts or things I would have done differently.

 

The Top Ten of '10 - Wilder's Picks

Hey internet,

Here's my list for the best films of 2010. I would like to quickly note that I haven't seen The Fighter, but I imagine it's not too different from every other great boxing movie. I will readily admit that Jose picked most of these, I've just re-ordered them, and added some that I hope Jose hasn't seen. And finally, haven't put True Grit on here simply because I don't think it belongs. It was really well made, and Jeff Bridges was fantastic. But it left me with nothing. The following ten left me with quite a bit.

So it's the time to see what last year brought us, now that we are recovering from those New Year party hangovers. Here is what we at the movie watch see as our favorites of 2010. It was a good year for movies I have to say:

Review: THE SOCIAL NETWORK

Like every David Fincher film I've seen, The Social Network thrives at a pace so well-suited for the movie, you feel as though the film itself is one of the characters. It's one of those movies where you can't help but marvel that every aspect of its making was just done right. It's one of those experiences where you often forget you're in a movie, staring helpless at the screen, hanging on every word. It's a fantastically well-made film.
