Review: THOR

            One of the biggest problems with The Hulk movies has been that it is really hard to take a big green dude with purple shorts seriously. Making a movie about a hammer-wielding Norse god who is prone to shouting “I AM THOR! THE THUNDER GOD!” and taking it seriously is perhaps even a bigger challenge. But unlike the Hulk movies, the filmmakers chose to embrace the absurdity of the movie’s premise and play along. The result is a movie filled with Viking pleasing, bashing fun that lacks the raping part of “raping and pillaging” in order to keep it PG-13. In other words, a brilliant kick off for this summer’s line of blockbusters.

 

And The Winner's Are... Predictable, for The Most Part.

            The results are in. And they have been found predictable. This year was the same as every other year; we all have a clear idea who is going to win what award, we are only hoping to be surprised in a category or two. The surprises were few this year, and frankly some of them were disappointments not epiphanies.

Review: NO STRINGS ATTACHED

No Strings Attached is a sweet and earnest romantic comedy that is very modern in its premise and yet has a surprisingly conservative payoff. Can friends have sex and stay friends? According to this movie the answer is no. This being a romantic comedy, you know they have to fall in love in the end, so you see it coming and yet this clashes so much against the philosophy through out of the rest of the movie that it bothered me enough to that the movie was no longer enjoyable as it had been for the previous hour and a half. I wish for the creative forces in Hollywood to be bold enough to do something different; I can keep wishing but I don’t think that is going to happen.

Review: BLACK SWAN

Darren Aronofsky said he was fascinated to make a re-imagening of Swan Lake because he thought the story of a girl who transforms into a swan to be similar to that of a werewolf. Frankly, I have never seen Swan Lake because I dismissed it… well, as a boring ballet about a swan. And I am still skeptical that a ballet performance would be able to capture the nightmarish thrill of this adaptation. If it does, then I can’t wait to see it.
