Trailer for Spielberg's Next Classic

It is good to see that Spielberg is involved in something more than "executive producing" the Transformers series, in which he had little involvement beyond convincing Michael Bay to do them. And hopefully those are over so the world can move on back to filmmaking.

War Horse seems to be an amalgamation of Spielberg's best a movie about a kid (and his horse) and a movie about a war (although not WWII this time). Hopefully we get to see more of this old Spielberg style before the world plunges into mo-cap and Bayahem for eternity.

Immortals Continues to Look More and More like 300

There are very few times when watching a trailer makes me what to see a movie less than before I had watched it. The first trailer of Tarsem's Immortals did just that. And the second trailer, released this weekend, managed to do it once again. Seriously, what was the need for this movie to look like a sequel to 300. Same color palette, same CGI effects, and it has pretty much the same feel. The only Tarsem-like part of it all are the ridiculous (and yet somewhat minimalist) costumes that were featured in both The Cell and The Fall. But even then 300 used similar costuming so that doesn't help.

Brave Trailer Surfaces

If you saw Cars 2 this weekend you would have been treated to a pick of Pixar's next film, Brave. But in case you didn't, or you were late to the theater, here it is:

Jaden Smith and Will Smith to Star in Untitled Sci-Fi Adventure for M. Night Shyamalan

JADEN SMITH TO STAR  WITH WILL SMITH IN

AN UNTITLED SCIENCE-FICTION ADVENTURE FOR COLUMBIA PICTURES

AND DIRECTOR M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN

CULVER CITY, Calif., April 4, 2011 – Jaden Smith is set to star opposite his father, Will Smith, for director M. Night Shyamalan in an untitled sci-fi adventure, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures.  Shyamalan and Will Smith will produce with James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ken Stovitz, Smith’s partners at Overbrook Entertainment. The screenplay is by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta.

Set 1,000 years into the future, a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.

Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “Night is an outstanding filmmaker who has a tremendous vision for this science-fiction adventure story and we couldn't be more excited to be working again with Jaden after our experiences on The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid. We’re thrilled to have the two of them together on this project.”

Shyamalan added, "The chance to make a scary, science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project."

For those of you who didn't see Tarsem's The Fall (2006) you are missing one of the most (if not the most) visually stunning films of all time. His next film The Immortals, comes out late this year, here is the poster .

New Costume for Wonder Woman Revealed

So the new Spiderman costume looks kinda cool, or at least less goofy than the one Tobey Maguire wore. However the NBC Wonder Woman remake apparently decided to go the opposite direction: to look as goofy as possible. Here is the costume Adrianne Palicki will wear for Wonder Woman:

I think it looks like a cheap Halloween costume. And since when does Wonder Woman wear pants! What do you think?

International Poster for X-MEN First Class Surface

       International posters are always interesting. Somehow Hollywood believes that everyone outside the United States will not understand their posters and so a new one is made. I like these poster for X-Men First Class the certainly seem to point the movie is headed in a new direction. Thankfully there is no sign of the Wolverine Claws anywhere. 

The Great Gatsby.... in 3D

You still think 3D is just a fad. Think again.

Everyday, more and more, it seems more filmmakers are embracing 3D, including first rate directors like Martin Scorsese. A few weeks ago I saw Sanctum, a movie I thought to be the first to use 3D in a way that actually enhanced the experience. But here is news of an experiment that just might do it once again.

IRON MAN 3 GETS NEW DIRECTOR

It is official Jon Favreau vacated the director's chair for Iron Man 3. In most circumstances this would be a tragedy, Favreau really help define the style in which not only Iron Man but the whole Avengers franchise would look on film. He gave the first two installments a quirky almost storybook quality that showed his background in fairy tale movies (Elf, Zathura) and was yet able to tell in with a straight face.

However there might still be hope for Iron Man 3 to hold its weight.

New Thor Trailer Surfaces

The first Thor trailer actually raised my hopes that Marvel was going to deliver another good pre-Avengers installment. At the very least it would be the one decent superhero flick this summer, since Green Latern looks like shit and we really don't need another X Men after X3 and Wolverine. But alas a new trailer has surfaced and this no longer seems as hopeful. I'll let you guys watch and have your say:

Here's a little behind the scenes video about how Arnie Hammer was able to pull off playing both Winkelvoss twins in The Social Network. The use of CGI is both very incredible and subtle, and surprisingly much heavier than you would expect in this sort of movie.

New Spidey Movie Officially Baptized

A few weeks ago we got the first glimpse of the new Spiderman costume Andrew Garfield will be sporting in the reboot. That pic gave us a hint of what Garfield would look like as Peter Parker but the full costume was not revealed; it was missing the mask and the web-slingers. The full costume was revealed today as well as the official title of the film. Lo and behold the new Spiderman movie's official title will be:

The Amazing Spiderman.

Studios must think we are stupid if they believe that to be news. Unlike real news, everyone saw this coming. The new costume is much more interesting. Here is a pic of what Spidey will look like in the reboot:

Thankfully the studio decided to drop the huge bug eyes of the design of Ultimate Spiderman. That would have looked ridiculous; I have to say web-slinger aside I like this costume better than the classically inspired one of the Raimi films. It still doesn't look like something a high-schooler would be able to make, but I would take someone wearing this costume much more seriously than someone in tight red spandex.

News from Howl

            Howl, a film about the life and work or the 1960s Beat poet Allen Ginsberg is to be released in the UK on February 25^th. The film will star James Franco as a young Allen Ginsberg as he works on his most controversial work, the poem Howl. In HOWL, Ginsberg recounts the road trips, love affairs and search for personal liberation that led to his most famous work, and the obscenity trial that ensued.

Razzie Nominations Announced

Following up with award seasons, the 31^st Golden Razzie Award nominations have been announced this week. For those of you who don’t know the Razzie’s are the anti-awards that celebrate the worst pieces of trash cinema has to offer. Like the Academy Awards, the Razzies tend to favor, or rather disfavor, high profile movies, stars and the like. Here are the nominations for this year’s greatest losers.

Dreamworks Animation in a Development Streak

Dreamworks Animation seems to be going on through a development extravaganza. After the success of Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon it seems that the studio has finally found a unique style that is almost free of the pop-culture references that plagued its earlier films. Furthermore, unlike Pixar who has stayed at a one-movie-a-year pace Dreamworks has been tackling two (soon to be three) projects a year. Despite the fact that the releases for this year, Kung Fu Panda 2 and the Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots, as well as the ones for 2012 and 2013 are already set the studio has announced seveal films in development that are set for future releases.

Alien Prequel Morphs into Prometheus

            Ridley Scott’s most recent film Robin Hood started out as a revisionist version of the story entitled ‘Nottingham’, in which the beloved thief was the villain and the sheriff was the hero. Through development it took an 180^o turn and became a rather straightforward version of the story we all know about. Once again his most recent project has morphed. What began as a two-part prequel project to the Alien quadrilogy is now an original science fiction project entitled Prometheus.

Ricky Gervais invited back to host the Golden Globes for a 3rd time!

So after the past few weeks of most everyone in Hollywood complaining about how Ricky Gervais offended everyone else at the most recent Golden Globes awards ceremony, it has been revealed that ratings indeed went up for the broadcast, and therefore Ricky has been invited back to host again next year. Gervais himself is unsure about a reprise though. Look's like ratings and revenue literally are everything.
