Well, I am extremely pleased that Robert Zemekis has gotten over mo-cap and gone back to real movies.

Trailer for Spielberg's Next Classic

It is good to see that Spielberg is involved in something more than "executive producing" the Transformers series, in which he had little involvement beyond convincing Michael Bay to do them. And hopefully those are over so the world can move on back to filmmaking.

War Horse seems to be an amalgamation of Spielberg's best a movie about a kid (and his horse) and a movie about a war (although not WWII this time). Hopefully we get to see more of this old Spielberg style before the world plunges into mo-cap and Bayahem for eternity.

Immortals Continues to Look More and More like 300

There are very few times when watching a trailer makes me what to see a movie less than before I had watched it. The first trailer of Tarsem's Immortals did just that. And the second trailer, released this weekend, managed to do it once again. Seriously, what was the need for this movie to look like a sequel to 300. Same color palette, same CGI effects, and it has pretty much the same feel. The only Tarsem-like part of it all are the ridiculous (and yet somewhat minimalist) costumes that were featured in both The Cell and The Fall. But even then 300 used similar costuming so that doesn't help.

The Trailer for Tarsem's Immortals

Tarsem boasted that there was no-CGI in The Fall what so ever; there are a few shots where I have my doubts. But overall the film does carry a tangible elegance, like a classic black and white photograph, that is almost unachievable when using has CGI. The Cell was loaded with practical special effects but it was a bit too early a time for heavy use of CGI. Both where visual masterpieces (although if their stories lacked a little punch).
Unfortunately this looks a little bit more like 300 than The Fall. Not only in the use of CGI, but overall in the way it is shot and laid out. I'm still excited to it: Tarsem plus Snyder's producer should still equal awesome. But I am a bit disappointed. What do you guys think?

New Trailer for DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 2 surfaces.

So, lately we have been posting ads by famous filmmakers with the argument that an ad is basically a short movie with a lot of product placement. And that craft-wise (perhaps even artistically) some deserve to be praised as a filmic achievement on their own. The same goes for movie trailers; it is not even that rare when one ends up being better than the movie. I doubt this will be the case. Nevertheless it is one hell of an epic trailer.

Announcing an Interesting Mash-up

I thought it all started with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, by Quirk Books publishing. The little mash-up was a success so without hesitating Quirk quickly developed the thematic sequel, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. It was an original idea to take classic novels and mash them up with something completely unrelated to them in anyway. Of course it did not take long for others to start copying bringing us Little Women and Werewolves, Android Karenina, and many others by different publishers.

New Thor Trailer Surfaces

The first Thor trailer actually raised my hopes that Marvel was going to deliver another good pre-Avengers installment. At the very least it would be the one decent superhero flick this summer, since Green Latern looks like shit and we really don't need another X Men after X3 and Wolverine. But alas a new trailer has surfaced and this no longer seems as hopeful. I'll let you guys watch and have your say:

X-MEN FIRST CLASS TRAILER SURFACES

Besides the fact that the franchise died with X Men 3, and that Aronofsky is slated to direct an unrelated quasi reboot of it with The Wolverine 20th Century Fox decided to milk The X Men franchise with X Men First Class.

The First Avenger Trailer Surfaces

The Trailer for Marvel's next Superhero flick, Captain America the First Avenger, surfaces.



At least it looks better than The Green Lantern, although expectations for that one are not being set anywhere near what one can call high. But I don't know; it fails to surprise me in the way the Thor trailer did. Certainly looking forward much more for that one.

TRAILER: Winnie the Pooh

The first trailer for Winnie the Pooh was released and boy does it bring back memories.

If Owl sounds familiar, then you need to get more sleep at night. Craig Ferguson joins Jim Cummings, Tom Kenny, Travis Oates and Bud Luckey in the voice cast. The tone is amplified by "Somewhere Only We Know" by Keane.

Winnie the Pooh will be in theaters July 15 2011

M. Night's The Last Airbender: New Trailer

So I just saw the trailer for The Last Airbender and I have to say it made me very happy. Like most fans of the animated series I was a bit shocked by the studios choice of director; that is until I re-watched some M. Night films (most importantly Lady in The Water). The truth is that M. Night has something most filmmakers involved in summer blockbusters nowadays lack: a balance of aesthetic and thematic values, a balance that comes from having a unique artistic vision. The combination of M. Night’s artistry and the adaptation that is not originally his own might result in one of the most refreshing Hollywood blockbusters in recent years (a good thing since last years sucked). Here is why:

First and foremost, it will not look like Speed Racer. From the trailer alone you can tell The Last Airbender is free of visual gimmicks. Yes, the settings look epic, which you expect from a fantasy movie like this. Yes, there will be special effects (they look pretty good). But pay close attention to how Sokka and Katara run through the ice: they move slowly and cautiously like human kids. This is because M. Night is a traditionalist; He rehearses with the actors for weeks, shoots on film, edits manually, and tries to use as little CGI as possible. I think Signs is his only movie with CGI but I might be wrong. In an M Night movie visuals are meant to compliment the story and characters not viceversa. And that is how it should be.

Secondly M. Night knows character. He is not the best in story but even in his most recent failures the focus is always on the characters. In every of his movies there is a scene or two showing the characters in their family and work environment. Just think about how in Sixth Sense he’s got you worried about Bruce Willis’ marriage. You think his wife is depressed because the marriage if failing and you think Willis is an ass for not trying to fix it. But in the end we realize the truth; the whole movie is about coping with death. All his other movies (except The Village) have a similar dynamic. There is a large happening (sorry for the pun) that the characters must undergo just to solve a small personal matter. In Sixth Sense is the marriage, as it is in Unbreakable; Lady in the Water is about being a father while Signs and The Happening has elements of both. The show Avatar is also about family, or rather about forming a new one and in the case of Aang (as in the case of Bruce Willis’ in both Sixth Sense and Unbreakable) it is about believing and forgiving yourself. Furthermore the character’s personal lives particularly relationships play as important a role as the main quest. Here M. Night is right in his territory. Unfortunately for M. most of the audience is not paying attention because they are looking for a twist, which is usually not there (his only two movies with pay off are Sixth Sense and The Village).

A third good reason is the fact that this is the first time M. Night works with an outside source. This is good since his most recent original ideas haven’t really been that good. Let’s see what he does with someone else’s. All his movies have been stand alone single pieces; it will be interesting what he does with a three-part trilogy. Interviews say he is keeping everything in. The trailer looks quite complete (there is a small shot of Jet and Suki is shown in one of the posters).

Finally the casting another thing that everyone complained about does not look bad (in fact it looks quite fitting) once you see it in context. Having said all of the above, I leave it for you to decide. Here is the trailer enjoy:

This looks to me like an offshoot of a zombie movie. On Serenity.

In other words, it looks awesome.

A Little Film to Follow the Big Ones

It seems that after The Ocean's films and his two part epic on Che, Steven Soderbergh decided for something a bit less ambitious and probably much more interesting. Amongst all the summer blockbuster's due this year here is a film that will probably pass under the radar of most people.

Trailer: Where The Wild Things Are!

So this morning the trailer for Spike Jonzes Where The Wild Things Are was premiered on the Ellen show and shortly after hit the internet.

The use of the band Arcade Fire for the trailer makes it seem even more magical. This film looks amazing. Hopefully the trailer isn't the best thing, but it definitely got me a lot more excited than I was when I first heard of this movie being made. The monsters look real and that's the most important hurdle that they had to get over. The trailer is below please watch it for yourself and comment with what you think!

I have just one little blurb for you today. I just saw the trailer for Shane Acker's new animated film, 9, and I nearly wet myself.

Maybe it's just me, but this looks like one of the most beautiful, original, and epic animated films in quite some time.
