Film Review: CLOUD ATLAS

Oh boy, where can I begin? Reviews have been mixed, and for a good reason; Cloud Atlas is a love it or hate it movie. I do not expect to find a middle ground. The great thing about movies like this is that they get people talking, debating, and thinking. So even if you are on the hate it crowd, this movie affected you in someway or other. Generally speaking, I’d say this is a good thing in any art form. Luckily for me, I am in the LOVE IT crowd.

Cloud Atlas tells six stories interwoven to various degrees, all with the same thematic elements: primarily the search for freedom and the human desire to be together. Individually each piece is engaging enough, it would have made a good short story. But the editing turns all six into a thematic concerto that only film as an art medium can provide. To think that the novel was considered “un-filmable” means there is a lack of creativity out there. If anything Cloud Atlas proves the vast versatility of film as a story telling medium.

The six stories that we see are:

Review: EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE

I knew a guy with much more intense Asperger's Syndrome than the hero of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, and he was nowhere near as mean-spirited and horrible as this kid. The guy I knew was one of the most genuine people I ever met. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close uses this character in a failing experiment for the two hours that it runs. This is a movie that wants us to feel much more than we are given.

Review: TOY STORY 3

It's been 11 years since Toy Story 2, one of the most solid sequels ever, was released. I've been waiting for this day for quite some time.

I'll get to the point. Toy Story 3 doesn't disappoint. It's a movie that really defies all logic, for it's animated movie that drew more emotion out of me than any live action movie I've ever seen in my life - and it's not even about humans.

Review: ANGELS & DEMONS

For anyone that enjoys a fantasy thriller, Ron Howard’s Angels & Demons is 100% pure fun and 90% harmless. The movie is set in a mystical and ritualistic world where two ancient organizations have waged a war for more than one thousand years. On one side we have the Vatican, the Holy See of the Catholic Church, and on the other we have the Illuminati, a group of pseudo-scientists who still think earth, wind, fire and water are the only four elements in the periodic table. The Vatican also has Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer) at their disposal whose knowledge about religion, science, and history prove to be the winning factor.
